Knowledge Exam Requirements:

  • If you don’t have a valid driver’s license from the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, or the Republic of Korea, you need to take the knowledge exam.
  • The exam has two parts and is taken on a computer.
  • Part one tests your knowledge of traffic signs and requires you to answer 10 questions correctly before moving on to part two.
  • Part two tests your general knowledge with multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 80% of them correctly to pass.
  • If you fail the exam and you’re under 18 years old, you must wait 15 days before retaking it.
  • You can only take the exam once per business day.
  • Translators are not allowed for tests in languages provided with audio versions or American Sign Language.
  • Failing the exam three times requires you to complete and pass the classroom component of driver education before retaking it.
  • Alternatively, you can satisfy the three-times-failure requirement by completing an approved 8-hour course based on the Virginia Driver’s Manual. This course is available at DMV-approved driver training schools or online.
  • You have the option to take the course either at driver training schools or online.
